I have been teaching guitar, electric bass, and woodwinds for over 30 years. I have a Bachelor of Arts from Northeastern Illinois University. I have performed all over the Chicago area in a variety of Rock, Americana, Country, Folk, Blues, and Celtic ensembles. I write original songs and compose music for dance and film. Some of the bands I have been in include; The Flynn Brothers Blues Band, Small World, Honeysuckle Road, Body Parts, Al Day and the Victors, and I have also performed with Bo Diddley as his bass player.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching private lessons since 1979. There is no greater joy for me than to see that spark of learning ignite and grow as my students discover that they can make music too. I tailor my lessons to match the goals of the student. Many of my students aspire to become professionals and others simply want to have fun with music. Whatever the reason a student chooses to pick up an instrument and play, my ultimate goal is to make sure that they learn the music that will inspire them to play.
METHODS USED
I always ask my students what they want to learn; I then fit the program to their needs. If they want to be a rock lead player, than we learn the scales, theory, techniques needed. If they want to play finger picked folk music, then we focus on those techniques and songs. I always recommend a strong background in theory and reading but I introduce it when the student is ready for it. Nothing is learned in a vacumn. There is always a purpose to anything I teach. The most important part of my method is to make sure that the student is learning how to play exactly what they want to. It is most motivating if this is the focus.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is patient, encouraging, and focused on what the student wants to learn, by quickly getting them to play the music they want to they are motivated to practice. It should be enjoyable first and foremost. For those that aspire to be professionals, I make sure the student understands the dedication and discipline necessary to achieve their goals. No two students are alike in terms of the goals they have or the method of teaching that will be the most effective for them. The approach must always be tailored to the student.
