When the first time my mother asked which instrument I wanted to learn, I chose clarinet without hesitation, facing a dazzling array of beautiful musical instruments. I have taught a wide range of insturments ranging from woodwinds like clarinet and flute to brass insturments like trumpet and baritone. I encourage a regular and consitent practice schedule, since it tends to help students progress and gain a passion for their insturment.All of my stuents are encoraged to participate in any esemble and solo competitons that are available, so that they can gain new and exciting experiences. There are so many different pieces of music out there, students can play a great variety of works at all different skill levels, and still be able to develop their intonation, articulation, and fingering accuracy. Students can expect to work from a variety of method books to study instrumental techniques, and music theory. For beginning students I prefer Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, but also work with any method book a student uses in their band class. Students will also work from the Peters/Yoder Master Theory Series. We will also incorporate a students "favorite" music to help develop listening skills and gain a level of comfort and familiarity with improvisation from the very beginning of their lessons with me. Classes for beginners will focus on tone quality, articulation, rhythm, reading music, and playing in time. Students will learn breathing and fingering techniques as well as structured routines for practicing at home. Intermediate players will begin by mastering the 12 major scales and arpeggios in straight and swing patterns. Basic 12-bar blues structure will be introduced and students will learn to improvise using the blues and pentatonic scales. Students will begin to develop an appreciation for different styles of jazz through listening and ear training. Read More
