Being able to read music is important, but what's more important is being able to hear music correctly. During the past few years, I found students often being interested in listening to music more than reading a written chart. For children who are just starting, I use Bastien Piano Basics Primer Level-Level 2. From here, students graduate to selections primarily from Bach, Chopin and Beethoven. For adults I use Alfred's beginner adult course. I also supplement these books with several books that I have in my personal library, such as Keith's Snell's Essential Piano Repertoire. I started teaching clarinet privately in 2012 during my undergraduate career and have been teaching students consistently ever since. I often encourage my students to bring in music that they would like to learn because working on music that you are inspired by and excited about encourages practicing (the same goes for me too!). I encourage students to enter as many performance opportunities as they can, especially since I am an avid performer myself, and am looking to expand my studio so that I can create student recitals where my students will be able to share their music and perform for each other.
