I first ask the student to play so I can hear him/her. After a student plays a short piece of music of their own choosing I can determine what the next step is. Each student has his/her own individual needs. In general though I focus on 3 key elements: 1) Sound quality 2) Technical dexterity (how the fingers deal with the twists and turns of the instrument) 3) Reading Music If a student has a specific genre of music that he/she wants to focus on then I mainly concentrate on that. I work together with my students to create realistic goals for growth and success. I believe in having high expectations for my students because I love seeing growing passion and love for something that is so important to me! I also make it a priority to create a safe space for my students to be able to communicate with me about goals and material. I make sure to try and get to know my students in order to help them grow as much I possibly can, to understand how each individual learns so I can create specific and individualized programs! I always want to help my students understand the basics of music and universal principles that can apply to any music they are interested in learning. Whether it's jazz, pop, classical, blues, most styles of music share these principles in common and are best played when the musician can understand the underlying structures. Rather than having students memorize one piece that they'll forget as soon as they move onto the next, I want my students to have the skills to play any music they like any time by helping them develop their ear. As a teacher, I am learning from my students as well - each person is a unique journey in the world of music and each person teaches me something about communication, understanding, motivation, time-managing during lessons and in individual practice. My main objective is to make the lessons a joy, a positive, motivating experience, to boost self-confidence and provide enjoyment, fun. I teach different people differently, using my background in psychology of learning, understanding individual needs. Read More

In order for my students to achieve their full musical potential, I am aware that each student is different in regards to learning. To achieve this, I spend a lot of time getting to know the student and how the learn best so I can accurately plan and prepare lessons, objectives, and goals to fit the needs of each individual pupil. From there, I facilitate and incorporate various methods of music teaching into my lessons and curriculum. Read More

I think that it is very important to teach not just how to play an instrument, but also the fundamentals of how music works and why. I create custom lesson plans so that my students not only learn to play the clarinet, but also gain fluency in music reading and music theory. Although method books are helpful tools, I do not consider myself or my students bound to them and I work with each student and their individual goals in order to craft lesson plans that work for both of us.
