For beginning learners, I attach great importance to the sitting position and ear training, so paying attention to intonation and awareness of sitting position when playing the cello is my primary consideration. For intermediate students who study for more than one year, I will pay more attention to left-handed skills and students' mastery of the bowing. For advanced players, I will focus more on musical interpretation and comprehensive techniques. All the left and right-hand skills will be put into the interpretation of music, this is the last step for students who playing cello. Read More

I have been playing cello for 20 years, after starting when I was 10. I was admitted to Jacksonville University at the age of 16 on a full scholarship, and there I pursued a double major in Music Theory Composition, and Cello Performance. I did my graduate work at Denver University, where I studied a variety of non-western musics, including Balinese gamelan, Ghanaian drumming, and Tuvan traditional music. I've had the opportunity to perform hundreds of times in my career in a variety of settings, including solo, chamber music, and orchestra. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to high school when I had only a couple of cello students. Since then, I have continued to teach and gain valuable experience both in private and group lesson settings, and with younger and older students. Going into my sophomore year of college, I realized just how much I loved teaching. Having the opportunity to share the gift of music with others in an effective way became one of the joys in my life. Read More

I attribute development of my teaching method to having started as young as I did; it is my firm belief that students and teachers should learn together, and that, especially with younger students, that it should be fun, engaging, and even a little bit silly at times. I both encourage and require regular practice on a consistent schedule; practicing not only helps students further their progress, but it helps them to avoid burnout by maintaining a view of music as less of a chore and more of a fun activity. I believe it's important for students and teachers to work together to set goals for what the student wants to accomplish. In this sense, I can be flexible -- I'm willing to push students who want to be challenged, or be a little more laid back for those who want music to be a side hobby. We will work together to create a plan that meets your needs. I also believe in fun! Read More

I believe in positive affirmation and goal setting. My goal with all students is that they enjoy learning, become self-motivated to practice, and consider their musical abilities as a gift which they can choose to share with others whenever they feel comfortable to do so. I have experience using a variety of method books and can easily recommend appropriate materials. I also encourage students to share with me and allow me to help them learn their favorite music, as well, even if that involves writing it out with or for them. Read More
