I began teaching in 2016 as a Strings Coach (violin, viola, and cello) with the Harmony Project. The Harmony Project brings music education to underserved communities at no cost to them. It was here that I realized that I am very passionate about music education and I want to continue seriously pursuing it. I began my journey to become a Suzuki teacher in 2021 and can teach levels 1-10 which means I can assist students from the beginner level to the advanced level. The Suzuki method has taught me that talent isn't innate and can be taught - with enough time and effort any student can achieve the level they wish. I generally rely on Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for Strings books when teaching beginners. These are great for building fundamentals on the instrument and introducing students to reading music. I supplement this with scales and the first Suzuki cello book, for an introduction to learning repertoire. As the student advances, we eventually shed the Essential Elements books in favor of various etudes books, depending on the student's needs. I use All for Strings, Suzuki, Klengel (scales) at the beginning level. I proceed to Concerto repertoire, Popper, Dotzauer etc. The usual classical repertoire. I will also transcribe popular pieces or pieces that the student enjoys to really increase motivation. I also test weekly to inform students of where their practice ability is at and what they need to improve on. Students will likely begin in a method book of some form, and eventually will use supplementary material as needed. The method books for Younger students typically consists of 3 or more levels depending on their skill, while the method books for older students provide a good outline of the technique for the instrument. The supplements provide materials to develop musicianship and artistry through repertoire. This approach allows the lesson to be tailored to the students' overall purpose for taking the lessons. From a family of musicians, I started playing the cello at the age of 5. After being a cellist for the Conservatory of Quebec Orchestra in Saguenay, I switched to percussion. I recorded the Flight of the Bumble Bee for the first time at age 14 and became a symphonic percussionist later with the National Art Center Orchestra of Canada as well as for the Ottawa Symphony while playing for the Starlighters and Savoy Swing Band at the Penguin cafe in Ottawa.
