For beginning students, I typically start with the Suzuki method books, because I think they lend themselves well to both kids and parents who are practicing with them. These books also come with accompaniment CDs which I find very important to learning. For adults, I like to have a conversation about what the student's goals are and what they are interested in and guide my instruction accordingly. I started teaching cello lessons 10 years ago in an after school program for 3rd and 4th graders. In this program, I taught music theory and group cello lessons for classes of 4-20 students. Around this time I also started teaching private cello lessons to students who wanted to move at a faster pace than group lessons. Since then I have taught many students of all ages and and levels. Some students are naturals at imitating what they hear, so we play to those strengths. Other students are more comfortable with structure and math, so we take that route instead.
