For beginning string student's, I use Essential Elements for Strings and Schroeder method books. Once the student has grasped the basic fundamentals and note reading, I begin to introduce solo repertoire from the Suzuki String method. Along with technical studies and solo repertoire, the student will learn scales ranging from one to four octaves. For beginning piano student's, I use the Bastein Piano series. In my lessons, I take an integrated approach to music education, drawing connections between music of practically any style, genre, or tradition; between musical technique, analysis, and expression; and between music as an abstract entity (e.g., a score, an acoustic phenomenon) and the cultural and historical context in which it is both composed and performed. I work on music not only from the Western classical tradition, but also from pop, rock, jazz, and folk music from around the world, as I believe all musical styles are worthy of exploration and consideration. Progress is not always easy when learning to play a new instrument. Everyone learns at there own pace, and with each lessons I will set attainable goals for the student. it is best when students have varying difficulties of material within their material in order to provide opportunity for satisfaction despite whatever struggles they may have. I encourage daily practice, even if only for small amounts of time. Effective practice requires some level of independence, and I focus a lot our time on the art of practicing, and how to focus your attention in order to get the best out of your practice time. For adult learners, I engage in a collaborative discussion about their musical preferences after introducing them to cello basics. I have five years of teaching experience, starting through the Saturday Conservatory of Music and Belmont Music Studio, and currently teaching cello through The Youth Center in the Los Alamitos Unified School District, including at Lee Elementary and Los Alamitos Elementary. As a performer myself — with the San Gabriel Symphony, South Orange County Orchestra, and as a cellist who's played under conductors like Gustavo Dudamel and Rafael Payare — I try to bring that same discipline and joy for the music into my teaching.
