I started teaching piano to both children and adults in high school. One of them was 5 years old, the other was 6, and another was 13 years old. I've also taught a 19-year-old for a short period of time. For the two kids who were 5 and 6, they were total beginners at piano and did not know anything about piano so my main focus was to introduce them to this instrument and teach them the basics of music theories, scores, and postures. If teaching the 'cello, I like to use the instruction book that I learned from which is Samuel Applebaum's Beginning Strings book and around this I will introduce more international music, often in duet form to help with intonation. After the student develops good basic technique, then sonatas and concerti are gradually introduced. If teaching the piano, then I make sure that Dozen a Day for the beginners is incorporated with any of the beginning/intermediate books such as John Thompson's, Edna Mae Burnam's or Frances Clark's methods and for more advanced piano students the Hanon exercises are included along with the standard Classical repertoire. I particularly enjoy helping others on their musical journey providing a holistic approach to each and every student. Progress is not always easy when learning to play a new instrument. Everyone learns at there own pace, and with each lessons I will set attainable goals for the student. it is best when students have varying difficulties of material within their material in order to provide opportunity for satisfaction despite whatever struggles they may have. I encourage daily practice, even if only for small amounts of time.
