For younger beginners I tend to use Hal Leonard's Guitar Method series to build a foundation of basic knowledge and fundamental techniques. From there I tend to focus on a custom lesson plan entailing a combination of music/exercises I believe the student will benefit from and enjoy coupled with whatever the student them self wishes to learn whether it's a genre of music, a specific song or something else. I have been teaching music since graduating with a Bachelor's degree in music education in 1991. While I have had an active performing career, I have always had more of an interest in teaching. I have taught privately in my own music studio, taught elementary music and choir, high school music theory and guitar, published my own series of method books and given seminars to teachers on developing their own guitar programs as well as infusing technology into their lessons. I teach students to transfer my extensive knowledge of music to anybody that is willing to learn. I started playing guitar when I was 12 years old. Later on in life, I started playing bass, banjo, ukulele and mandolin. I play in several different orchestras and bands. My orchestra playing involves a local theater company, as well as various high schools. I also perform regularly for Musicians on Call, a not-for-profit organization that brings the power of music to patients' bedsides in the Philadelphia area. Read More

There's always going to to be someone out there who has information or a perspective that can help you see things differently. I started out playing classic rock, blues, bluegrass, folk, metal - just about every style of music. Read More

If I am teaching beginners I will focus on developing proper technique (i.e. hand placement and crossing strings). How one ends is contigent on how they start, so I make sure beginners have proper technique before moving on to repertoire. I will also have beginners go through the Hal Leonard method books to ensure they have the theory necessary to progress. Once the students have developed the necessary technique and theory, I will give them more challanging material to learn. Read More

In my lessons I integrate music theory with instrumental technique as I feel that comprehension of the music is essential to better performance and developing better musicianship. I will work with students to help them learn repertoire that they are interested in and excited about as well as serving them their healthy music vegetables to help them develop as musicians. There are several methods books that I like to work with; Read More
