I've been teaching guitar for the past 4 years now, and I like to focus on a fun way of learning I achieve that by starting to learn songs right away no matter what level you have on guitar, we explore your favorites artists and I plan my class around that, teaching you chords progressions, scales, improvisation, how to read music, how to read tablatures, finger independence all of this keeps the class fun while learning all the information needed to be proficient with the instrument, we can go from a basic understanding of the guitar to a professional level. For me it is really important to establish a personal relationship with the student and always evaluate how they feel about their progress on a weekly basis. I always emphasis that a student know what style or genre of music they are interested in because they are more likely to stick to something that they have a natural passion for. Every lesson officially starts with a scale warm up to get the blood flowing to the players fingers and from there we go to either some sight reading pieces from the Hal Leonard books, chord changing or soloing exercises, and then lastly go to practicing a specific song of either mine or the students choosing. Although I have no experience teaching music, I do have experience tutoring young students in other subjects. It was rewarding work and helped pay the bills, but I was not fullfiled. I wanted to teach music, but I didn't have the chances or desire to really do it. I decided recently that I wanted to teach music, I loved it so much I want to show willing students the beauty of music. Read More

I find a balanced approach to studying technique, sight reading, theory and the students favorite songs to be the best recipe for keeping motivated and engaged. Beginning students will use Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method (Book 1) to get into the basics of these elements down, while learning basic voicings of the most common chords that will allow them to dive into playing some of their favorite songs almost immediately. Lessons for more advanced students will be tailored to their individual needs, and can cover anything from improvising, to songwriting to learning complicated solos and advanced guitar techniques. My approach is highly structured. We might start with warm-ups. This can mean, for example, Hanon exercises on the piano. Or playing scales on the guitar. I like to set tempos and practice rhythm as we run scales and chords. Sometimes I use a beat box. I believe in getting the client playing. I play only to demonstrate. I can also be a side player, and play a rhythm part, if the client is playing a solo. Read More

Is always good for beginners to have a book that includes a basic outline of the guitar parts, string names, and general terminology. This includes but is not limited to Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or Guitar for Absolute Beginners by Daniel Emeri. After we passed the fundamentals, the class will be customized to each student's needs. Say for instance, if the student is interested in blues guitar playing, a big part of the lesson will involve transcribing some of the greatest blues players and we will focus on the bend and vibrato technique. I like to take each of my students on a case-by-case basis. I learn a little about them, what their goals in taking lessons are, and what kinds of music the like to play. When I reach for a method book, it is usually Mel Bay or Berklee Music Press for electric bass and guitar, or The Simandl Method for upright bass. I like to gauge what level the student is at and go from there, making sure that they have a strong foundation of fundamentals regardless of what the student's ultimate goal is. Read More
