I'm always encouraging and pushing my students to practice more on a daily basis and make them aware that practice and going over the lessons over and over makes them better every day. I'm always also pushing and motivating them to learn more and practice more. The more they practice each lesson the better they become and the more they would have control of the instrument. Taking that into account, there is always an evaluation performed to gauge competency of the instrument and knowledge of music theory if you're not a beginner. If you're a beginner, you were put in a beginning class. this makes it very difficult for students to advance quickly because they aren't playing music with people who are more advanced than them. I make sure the students have the ability to play the instrument before they learn a ton of theory, because knowing how the wrritten form of music work without being able to play them is recipe for frustration.
