I believe that music should be fun and enjoyable and I approach teaching in a friendly, calm and supportive manner. I like to communicate clearly, calmly and in a manner that is helpful and not critical. I find it tremendously important to be patient, engaging and encouraging of my students. I started teaching at a small music store in Hollywood, Florida called The Banjo Shop. As the store specialized in Bluegrass music, I was hired to teach students the pop and rock songs being played at that time. I taught there for three years before relocating to North East Ohio. After taking some years off to raise a family I started teaching at GitterPicker String Factory in Twinsburg in 2005. In 2008 I opened my own music studio in Northfield, Ohio called the Olde 8 Guitar Studio and have been teaching ever since! Read More

My methods of instruction are taylor made for each individual student. For example I will teach a beginner student that wants to learn the guitar as an instrument and music theory basic technique, chords, scales, and how to read music, as well as enjoyable songs that capture their personal interests. I prefer Mel Bay instruction books and encourage playing by ear that is appropriate to the level of the student. Read More

Nothing is better than watching a student make the transition from one level of playing to the next. It is important that each student progress at his or her own pace. This is achieved by setting realistic goals each week. I love to encourage students' success by acknowledging their accomplishments, no matter how small. This helps fuel their desire to get better. I want to know what inspires my students so I can bring that into the lesson every week. Read More

I simply enjoy helping people establish and accomplish their goals on their instruments. The first step is to identify what holds a student's attention. What is it about music that has motivated them to study? Not everyone has the same goal or vision, which is a good thing. Even self-taught musicians incorporate theory and harmony into their compositions. My personal style toggles between when I was 14 learning Metallica songs to the present, having studied jazz and classical harmony. Read More

A parent of a former studnet of mine had this to say about me - "Owen has been our 11 year old daughters guitar teacher for almost two years. During that period she has excelled, not only in ability but also in self-confidence and her enthusiasm for playing. Owen is a gifted teacher but he is also warm, patient and fun." - Samantha J. I love teaching and there is nothing more rewarding to me than seeing a students passion for the instrument and music grow. Read More
