I don't think there is any one method book or instructional DVD that will give you everything you need. Even if an educational resource is extremely well done, it will still need to be tailored and digested in a certain way for each student. I generally use Mel Bay's Guitar 1 - expanded edition. While working with this book, there are additional materials such as exercises, concepts, and musical ideas often inserted at key moments. Read More

Right around age six, I discovered that my hands were finally big enough to fret a guitar! I spent the next decade banging away on my own amongst the redwoods north of San Francisco. Bass, keys, mandolin, and vocals soon slipped into my repertoire, filling the space where a proper social life might otherwise have been. I swore to never go pro, lest it ruin the fun. For most of this time, I had assumed that good music died when The Beatles broke up, but in high school I flung my mind open to the stylistic diversity of the digital age. Read More

Im a composer and musician, and I love learning and teaching how music works. I graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego in 2018 with a Bachelors in Music composition and have been making and teaching music ever since. I started guitar and drum lessons when I was ten years old, motivated by the joy of rocking out and expanded to classical instruction in highschool. I love to bring that rock-out spirit to my classical experiences and incorporate classical strategy and awareness to my popular musical expressions. Read More

I teach reading to all of my younger and beginner students but I like to balance that with material that is a little more enjoyable for them. I like to work with the student to settle on something from their own music collection that is at an appropriate level for them to learn. I can learn guitar parts by ear very quickly so it's easy to jump right in to whatever a student may suggest, but I also have a collection of tunes at different levels that I have had success with in the past. One of my main goals as a teacher is to get to know my student, how they best learn, and what it is they love about music. My own love for music and particular bands/genres is what gave me the drive to keep practicing, and I bring this same approach to each of my lessons. Nothing makes me more happy than to see one of my students getting excited about something they are playing--and because of this, I structure my lessons to maximize the aspects of music each student enjoys, while making sure to incorporate fundamental aspects of technique and music theory regardless of the particular music we are studying. For beginners I like to use books and a few easy songs to get the student started. As skill level grows, I try to encourage students to form their own chord progressions as well as using songs that I choose or a song the students chooses that will encourage them to play and learn more songs on their own. I also encourage intermediate level students to explore their imaginations and create their own songs. Read More

Especially for upright bass, technique and proper muscle use is of utmost importance. Ensuring a student will not injure themselves immediately or with continued practice would be covered first especially for beginners. After proper technique and comfort is established, we learn scales, sight reading, solo or duet pieces selected by ability, as well as any thing the student shows interest in learning. Also important to me is instrument maintenance! Cleaning your bass, bow hair, and properly humidifying the instrument. Read More
