The Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet was selected as the 2007 Down Beat Magazine best college ensemble. Cory credits the Brubeck institute as one the most insightful musical experiences. I incorporate different styles of teaching including 'rote learning', which is essentially learning by ear and imitation, as well as uniquely tailored exercises. I incorporate different warm-up etudes that I use with each student to build basic fundamentals of learning the instrument. And I also encourage students to practice scales and drills to develop their muscle memory. I tailor the program to the student's needs. A student seeking a traditional eduction would be presented with method materials such as Simandl, as well as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Pop, jazz and other genres of music could be explored, depending on the goals of the student. As a jazz musician, I find that learning multiple styles opens up whole worlds of expression and concept. Although I have my own methods and "prescribed" teaching materials, I love to keep a dialogue with the student. I always ask what their goals with music are, as I will then tailor the lessons accordingly. If a student says to me that they want to work towards an audition, I know that I can push them harder in terms of expectation and material.
