When beginning teaching I typically assess the learners general attention span, natural strengths, and what is motivating for them. I complete a beginner piano assessment to find out how the learner is with pattern recognition, any previous knowledge they may have, and what type of instruction they respond best to. When I understand the learners least restrictive environment I will choose the type of notation we start with. This can be traditional sheet music, pop chords, or adapted notation that may consist of numbers, letters, and/or colors. Read More

Like stated in my methods, I strive to provide the best lesson experience for each student. There is a certain ratio of theory to songs that must be achieved and it is different for every student . By teaching the student songs that they want to play we achieve the fun part required for any students success on their instrument. After this we can teach as much theory and technique as the individual desires. Read More

My program is one that I have developed over the last 18 years. I use no method books. I ask my students to bring a blank manuscript book that I will fill up as we go forward. I also highly encourage all of my students to have a keyboard of some kind available to them, IE: a piano, organ, or even one of those battery-powered little CASIO keyboards that one can buy for $15-25 at a Salvation Army or Goodwill store. I have a passion for music. I started on the piano when I was seven years old and I've never looked back. After spending years in grade school, junior high and high school learning and performing in the band program on trumpet and euphonium, I moved on to play euphonium in The Most Exciting Band in the Land, the Ohio University Marching 110! In the Marching 110 I played in front of thousands of people at Ohio University's Peden Stadium and at professional football games in Cincinnati and Buffalo. Read More

I have performed in around the world and recently completed a tour of India. Two of my recent albums were selected for the final 2015 Grammy Ballot. Read More

The material I teach covers scales, chords, and music theory. We can practice a variety of exercises that help improve your rhythm and dexterity. In order to tie everything together, I think it is important to play music with each other and along with recorded music as an example. Admittedly, the content of scales, chords, and music theory in itself can be dry. This is why I tend to customize how to practice something like a pentatonic minor scale. Read More

I am a easy going guitarist who loves to play and talk about music. I have played guitar for fifteen years and have taught throughout my own education. I teach basic to advanced techniques and theory and can translate the concepts to other instruments like bass and keys. I took private lessons as a youth for many years and have since taught myself further. My primary background is in blues-based rock. Read More
