I originally enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown to earn a degree in Elementary Education. After my second year, I left to persue other endeavors. In 2010, I began taking on guitar students in Windber, PA teaching beginner and intermediate guitar lessons to several high school students. I have done group sessions which usually turn into jam sessions focusing on each students individual strength while showing them how to play with others, but I also enjoy individual sessions that go more in depth with structure, form, rythm, and some music theory involved. I can't remember exactly what those songs were, but I think it was Led Zeppelin, or something like that. Music is a general subject that everyone loves. The idea of being able to pass that on to others makes it even more worthwhile. The usage of positive reinforcement in my lessons allows students to learn more effectively and efficiently. Setting up micro goals that build up to larger ones has been successful in my classroom. In the first lesson, I find out what my students' goals and interests are, whether it be learning music for fun, working toward a performance, brushing up on technique, etc. Once we have established a clear goal, I work together with my students to devise a plan for achieving said goal. For example, if a student wants to take voice lessons for fun, we start each lesson with several different vocal exercises for warming up the voice and exploring technique. Read More
