I have been playing music for the vast majority of my life, it is my passion and purpose in life. I play a multitude of genres and instruments because I love to be able to speak every dialect of Great Communicator, the universal language that is Music. I have played in Arabic, Jazz, Folk, Country, Metal, Funk, large Orchestras, small chamber classical music throughout my varied carreer as a performer and I thouroughly enjoy catering my education approach to my student's individual tastes. My teaching methods are based on what interests the student. For beginning students, I begin my lessons with the basics of the instrument and use beginning method books for basic techniques. In addition, I choose some basic popular songs to give them an excitement for what they are learning. For students who have a bit more familiarity with the instrument, I tailor my lessons to the needs of the student. Read More

For beginning students, I start with the traditional Mel Bay (or comparable) beginner books that focus on the fundamentals while building strength and coordination and just build from there. For students with a little more experience, I like to focus on more challenging exercises and concepts while nurturing their knowledge of music theory and performance. Each student is different and knowing what motivates them motivates me. My goal is to have them want to pick up their instrument and play. Read More

Hello future students! I much enjoy sharing my experience as a creative musician to my students whether they are 5 or 55, beginner or advanced. I am a patient teacher and do my best to encourage each student to find themselves as unique learners (musicians) unto themselves. I graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2002 with a BA focus on Music Composition. While recently living in NYC, I formed a 12-member saxophone orchestra, composed and recorded two symphonies, performed and recorded with the late Glenn Branca's 100 Guitar Ensemble, and provided live Sound Design for renowned poetess Anne Carson. My lessons will be pretty focused on music theory so that, in time, the student will be able to make their own music with ease. For new beginners, I'd likely ask which song they wanted to learn. And then I'd teach it to them, while also explaining scales, how to build chords, and the theory used in the song. Because my favorite part of playing music is improvisation, that's my go-to goal for the student, but I'm always willing to adjust my teaching methods accordingly. Read More

Depending on a student's interests, I could start with several books like Rufus Reid's Evolving Bassist (for all-around bass playing). If reading skills are a main goal of a student's focus, I use repertoire from the standard canon and IMSLP. I feel that improvisation is an often overlooked key to self-expression and mastery of one's instrument, so I introduce concepts used in making up solos and some theory as soon as possible. Read More

My teaching style is structured, practical, and student-focused. I work with beginners through adult students, combining proven method-book concepts with real musical examples drawn from well-known songs and styles. I expect effort and active participationnew concepts are demonstrated, then immediately reinforced by having students play them back. When questions come up, I break ideas down from a theoretical, technical, and rhythmic perspective while also discussing the less tangible elements of style and feel. Read More
