Overview:
Hi! I’m Steven Prevett, a composer, songwriter, performer, and music instructor from Flint, Michigan. I’ve been teaching guitar, ukulele, bass, songwriting, and music theory for over a decade, working with students of all ages and skill levels. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to take your playing to the next level, I’m here to help you grow and have fun with music.
I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Music from Central Michigan University, where I focused on composition and classical guitar. Outside of teaching, I perform with the bluegrass band Mad Dogg and the Strays and the accordion & guitar duo Everything but the Polka. I’ve also written music for short films, theater productions, and comedy projects.
As a teacher, my goal is to meet you where you are and build lessons that match your learning style and interests. I love helping students discover their unique musical voice—whether that’s through learning their favorite songs, improving technique, or writing original music.
When I’m not teaching or performing, I work full time as a guitar builder at Cirrus Guitars in Rochester Hills, MI. In my free time, I enjoy watercolor painting and animation.
I’m excited to help you on your musical journey!
EXPERIENCE
Learning music has change my life and continues to do so. I want to share my experiences with others and hopefully make a difference in their life. My goal as an instructor is to help students gain the necessary skills & knowledge to further themselves as growing musicians. I do this by providing a unique & exciting learning experience that best fits each individual student. I encourage student to not only learn how to read the notes, but to learn music as a language and an art. I have had the opportunity to work with students of all ages, from pure-beginners, to advanced players looking to expand their knowledge.
I can also do private instruction in my home, your home or online! For more information, please feel free to contact. I am looking forward to meeting with you!
METHODS USED
For beginners, I teach from the Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Books. This is to get a basis of music such as rhythm, notation & the fundamentals of guitar. These elements would also apply to learning other fretted-instruments. I spend half the lesson time working on book material, form, and technique, & the remaining half on material the student is interested in.
For intermediate and advanced students, I tailor each lesson to meet your goals - whether that's technique, sight-reading, theory, performance, or more.
LESSON STYLE
My mission is to create a space where creativity, growth, and fun come together through music. I believe that learning an instrument should not only improve your technical ability but also help you grow as a well-rounded musician. In my lessons, I focus on building the skills you need to reach your goals while helping you explore those tricky musical questions you might not have answers to yet. I carefully track each student’s development and adjust my teaching style to support your personal growth, learning pace, and musical interests. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to deepen your skills, I’m committed to guiding you in a way that keeps you inspired, challenged, and enjoying the process.
