I'm a passionate musician who eats, sleeps, and breathes music. The minute I had a guitar in my hand since I was 14, I never stopped falling in love with the instrument. While I graduated in 2015 with a Bachelors of Science degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago, I was performing with local musicians around the area and taking jazz lessons with faculty and students within the university. Since moving to Detroit at the end of 2015, I have become integrated within the local Detroit music scene, playing with two bands currently, which have played music festivals such as the Hamtramck Music Festival and the Detroit Concert of Colors. One of the best things in life is playing music with other people. Unlike sports which eventually can wear your body down till you're unable to play anymore, music is something we can all take part in up through very old age! Whether a student wants to pursue a freelance career or just maintain a hobby that gives balance to their life I teach to their goals.--Some of my most productive lessons were those that I played (read or improvised) duets with my teachers. Just as every player has their own musical personality and voice, so too does every lesson that Nicholas gives. In a supportive, patient environment, every lesson is custom tailored to the student. Being musical is inherent to being human, so when a students’ musical abilities fail to progress, it is the teaching method that has failed, not the student. While my educational background allows me to offer my students a high level of instruction in instrumental technique, my first priority with every student is to foster their love and understanding of music through playing their instrument. There really is no limit to which methods work for people. Every person learns their own way, and it is true that a variety of methods work for an individuals learning process. I enjoy employing all ways of experiencing music including playing by ear, reading sheet music, learning music theory and its practical applications, as well as playing with others and truly feeling what the music is wanting to say. For beginning students, I start with the traditional Mel Bay (or comparable) beginner books that focus on the fundamentals while building strength and coordination and just build from there. For students with a little more experience, I like to focus on more challenging exercises and concepts while nurturing their knowledge of music theory and performance. Each student is different and knowing what motivates them motivates me. My goal is to have them want to pick up their instrument and play. Read More

For beginners, I teach from the Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Books. This is to get a basis of music such as rhythm, notation & the fundamentals of guitar. These elements would also apply to learning other fretted-instruments. I spend half the lesson time working on book material, form, and technique, & the remaining half on material the student is interested in. For intermediate and advanced students, I tailor each lesson to meet your goals - whether that's technique, sight-reading, theory, performance, or more. Read More
