B/A in Jazz studies
I’m a professional guitar and bass instructor with over 20 years of playing experience and more than a decade of teaching and gigging professionally. I studied jazz at Wayne State University and have performed in a wide range of styles, from jazz and blues to rock, funk, and beyond. I have been playing gigs around the Midwest and beyond for over 10 years. My lessons are tailored to each student’s goals—whether you want to build solid fundamentals, learn your favorite songs, or develop real-world musicianship and improvisation skills.
I have over 10 years of teaching experience at five different music studios, working with both private students and group classes. I teach using trusted method books from Proline, Berklee Press, and Hal Leonard, along with custom materials I’ve developed over the years. My instruction covers music theory, jazz improvisation and line-building, and practical song analysis drawn from my professional gigging background. I regularly break down rock, blues, and metal songs for students while also helping them develop their own musical ideas and original compositions.
I teach students from beginners through adults and tailor each lesson to the individual. My teaching style combines structured concepts from method books with real examples from well-known songs to help students understand how music works in a practical way. I regularly ask students about their interests and goals and either teach those directly or suggest related material that helps them progress. During lessons, I record short demonstration videos and provide detailed tabs with practice notes so students leave with clear guidance on what to work on between sessions.
My teaching style is structured, practical, and student-focused. I work with beginners through adult students, combining proven method-book concepts with real musical examples drawn from well-known songs and styles. I expect effort and active participation—new concepts are demonstrated, then immediately reinforced by having students play them back. When questions come up, I break ideas down from a theoretical, technical, and rhythmic perspective while also discussing the less tangible elements of style and feel. Lessons are guided by each student’s interests, and I either teach those directly or use related material to help them reach their goals. To support progress outside of lessons, I provide recorded demonstrations and customized tabs with clear practice notes.
