I approach teaching as a creative coach. My goal is to build a strong foundation of knowledge and skill that the student then can use to empower their creativity. From the beginning we learn music theory and how scales work on guitar. What makes guitar special as an instrument. We learn exercises and chords to build finger strength and knowledge of the fretboard. But most importantly I open space for creative exploration. Read More

Watching a student develop a true love and passion for music is the driving force behind my desire to teach. Being a great teacher is about understanding that every student is different and the pace in which they progress and learn is completely unique. Attainable and tangible goals are what I am all about and that is what I design my lesson plan to accomplish. We will make a list of objectives and inspirations at our first lesson. Read More

My teaching experience started in musical theatre as a writer when I was 17. I was the bassist in an original production. My more recent experience has been as an educational artist for Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Ga. I’ve had private students from all ages and ethnic backgrounds. The awesome thing about teaching music is that no matter what language one may speak we all can communicate through music. I feel that music is my strongest form of communication and bringing people together. Read More

My teaching methods are relatively universal. With younger students, I focus more on learning to have fun while learning about their instrument at the same time. The more fun they're having, the more likely they are to stick to it. For adults, I keep this same philosophy in tact, but incorporate more technique, theory, and performance practice into our sessions in order to facilitate the learning curve. Once I know what my student enjoys about music, I tailor my lessons around that. Read More

My methods are not standard, I believe in teaching technical sides of an instrument and the creative sides. For younger students I will teach them the basics of chords and progressions, eventually leading to write their first songs. For young adults and adults I want to have them learn chords, styles, and the uses of their instruments. Creativity will always be the most important thing to hone. Finding inspiration through practice and jamming with a friend or even a teacher is something I want to teach. Read More

For beginner kids, I typically use the Liela Fletcher Lesson Book series. I find that my students usually progress faster with this series. For teens and adult beginners, I use the James Bastien "Older Beginner Series or John Thompson series to get them started. After basic fundamentals have been I established then I direct the lessons in the area of the student's interest. Sometimes I am able to do this while the student is learning the fundamentals.
