For beginning students I always begin with a methods book, I believe that good fundamentals are what makes a good musician, but I also teach ear training methods thereby giving the student the best in both worlds. Once the fundamentals and foundation are efficient, then according to the instrument I move to solo repertoire or experimentation or interpretation. With children, I usually recommend easy to sing along songs that they have heard growing up like "Silent Night" etc, and I usually pick their songs unless they like songs that are in their vocal range and not difficult on the voice. I want them to enjoy singing and stick with it, instead of getting frustrated and not liking the music. If they mix it up with my choices and some of their choices that i approve of, then they are more likely to stick with it. Read More
