I have been teaching violin for 30 years, starting as a bluegrass and Irish fiddle teacher in a folk music store run by a family of performers who were related to the von Trapps of The Sound of Musicfame. Since then, I have tried to continually grow as a performer, musician, and teacher. When I teach teenagers or adults I usually start with Alred’s Basic Adult Piano Course Book, as well as a music theory book that is suited to the student. I like Alfred’s series for the young beginner as well, but have also used the Bastien series. For voice students I use a warm up book and a sight singing book. Beginning piano students who are children will begin with the Faber and Faber lesson books which slowly progress the student through techinque and rhythmic exercises built into easy memorable songs. After building a strong base of fundementals I will the begin to introduce and teach songs the student wishes to learn alongside traditional literature to continue the technical progress.
