I began teaching at the Long Island Drum Center in 1990 and was the youngest instructor ever added to their ranks alongside their world renown faculty. Since then, I have taught hundreds of students in many locations in New Jersey and in New York. I have participated in drum clinics, been interviewed by major drum publications, and am a member of the Vic Firth Education Program. My teaching experience dates back to my high school days, as I began teaching private lessons while being a section leader for band, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio ever since. I tell all my students, "A little a day goes a longs way," to remind them the benefits of keeping up with consistency with their craft to see results in their progress. I am open to trying exercises with a student regardless of their skill level to see if they can comprehend the lesson. Sometimes, a student with less experience has better luck counting the beat out and putting it together from a mathematical perspective, others prefer to feel the beat first and the physicality comes out of that. Every student is different and I never push them past what they are capable of doing; rather, I like to see, after a while of teaching, if the concepts are resonating on a deeper and more understood level. Although I have my own methods and "prescribed" teaching materials, I love to keep a dialogue with the student. I always ask what their goals with music are, as I will then tailor the lessons accordingly. If a student says to me that they want to work towards an audition, I know that I can push them harder in terms of expectation and material.
