There is no judgement on the capability of learning an instrument and because of that I completely understand how long (or how short) a student can learn the drums/piano etc. I try to make every student feel accomplished in a session especially when the material being taught is new and intimidating. But regardless, there will always be a sense of accomplishment because as long as the student feels as if they accomplished something(small or large) I will make it my duty to make sure they know it. I honestly love teaching young and beginning students because they're an absolute blank slate, something I do not take lightly. Having fun and establishing a strong practice routine is paramount with younger students. I emphasize listening to records/music with all students but especially with more intermediate to advanced students. I use the first lesson to assess the skill level of the student. If the student is a beginner from this assessment, I will ensure they purchase the Stick Control Book by Kevin Barret to begin working on reading for the snare drum. I will also make sure that they begin to understand and practice the 26 rudiments which is essential for every drummer to know. For more advanced students, we would focus on their specific goals, whether strictly related to four way coordination, styles that they want to enhance and support in live or recording settings, as well as mentorship on building a community in music and getting gigs. For beginners I usually start them off with two books, Stick Control and Funky Primer. I then pair what they learn from those with real world examples and try to incorporate that into songs that they want to play. For more intermediate students we focus more on developing their musical vocabulary and all around versatility. We go more in depth on rudiments and using them around the kit.
