I teach because I love imparting knowledge and making connections in this way, and because I love the fundamental building blocks of musicianship and music theory. I have found that with careful attention to a student's character, the possibilities for learning are boundless. I like to let love guide the process, in the sense that I observe carefully the kinds of sounds that a student is fond of, and attempt to structure their learning in a way that empowers them to make those sounds. For the past 13 years I've been teaching private lessons in my studio as well as at students homes. I encourage regular practice on a consistent schedule especially for younger students, as it tends to help them progress and gain a passion for the instrument. In my school-aged students, I implement the NYS Common Core curriculum into lessons to ensure they are in alignment with learning vocabulary as well as critical thinking of music. Read More

Effective music education is both developmentally and culturally appropriate: By working with the student to understand their interests, I hope to provide them with an experience that will enrich their musical and social life outside of the work we do together. Through infancy, I believe Music Learning Theory is effective for developing musical and linguistic skills. If a student in toddlerhood/childhood shows that they have a preferred way to express themselves musically, I will tailor lessons around the Kodaly (voice), Orff (instrumental), or Dalcroze (dance) philosophies. My teaching style is both rigorous and positive. I believe that the best way to learn any skill is through hard work and persistence in a judgement-free, positive psychological environment. I work in a routine every lesson so that students understand the next step in the process. I make accommodations for each student depending on their personal goals, needs, and learning styles. No two students are the same, so no two lessons should be the same. Read More

The essence behind my teaching style is constructed from an active gathering of ideas from the worlds of vocal pedagogy, body awareness, movement, emotional awareness, affirming language, and space holding. Developing a plan with the student versus “for” the student is also an essential piece to fostering success and allowing the student to witness their own understanding of the work - placing high emphasis on the journey and viewing snapshots on a timeline to recognize progress. I have been singing since the age of nine and playing the piano since I was thirteen. I started at the Brooklyn College conservatory and through opportunities have performed at different venues. I spent almost 20 years in private study though my educational background including through high school to graduate school. I have studied under several well known performers including Valerie Coates, Gene Bullard, Gerald Brown, and Paul Kim. As well as I have been a private instructor for over 10 years. Read More

One last thing that is important about me and my journey as a teacher is that I am a baritone. This is something I used to fight. I felt like I was being left out of the musical theatre scene because I couldn't sing as high as some of my tenor peers. I spent pretty much all of undergrad screaming in practice rooms trying to gain an upper range. Unfortunately, my teachers at the time didn't have the knowledge necessary to healthily guide me through this process (see above). Read More
