As mentioned previously, my Philosophy is this: think like a learner so that learners are able to learn from someone who thinks like them. I like to start my lessons from the very beginning which is tuning the instrument, so that the instrument sounds good. To me music is about 10% technicality and 90% feeling. Because you can play through an entire piece without any emotion and it won't be enjoyable because it doesn't feel good. Read More

For beginning students, whether they are children or adults, I typically start with an introduction to main vocabulary words that will be used often during classes and a lesson in diaphragmatic breathing for singing. My classes are always tailored to each individual student, so on day one I like to spend a few minutes allowing my students to open up and tell me about their personal music goals, what drives their passion, who they look up to vocally, and what styles they would be most interested to hone in on. At Northwestern, it was my responsibility, on top of earning my degree, to teach lessons to non-music major students. These student came from all backgrounds and experience levels, and their fields of study included math, computer science, drama, and more. Along with my other students, who I've taught privately for years, they all made improvements in performance practice, musicianship, and, of course, their voices. The principles of singing are universal for every voice, and their so simple that adjustments are easy to make based on voice type, experience level, or any other factor. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More
