for VOICE Students: I usually associate singing the song with some kind of activity, usually passing a bouncy ball to the beat, or throwing it back and forth. From there, we progress to tapping the beat or the rhythm while singing. Then well combine the two: student claps the rhythm while I tap the beat, and vice versa. I want my students to be able to clearly distinguish these two elements, and to be able to feel and maintain a steady beat which will set them up with a strong foundation for playing more advanced music. He was on the autism spectrum but also suffered from a variety of processing impairments. He would socialize with me more than other autistic students I'd worked with, which definitely facilitated instruction, but to get the most out of that, I had to stay on subject matter that sparked not just his interest but his joy, on a constantly rotating basis. To be even more specific, once, I had to transcribe and teach him the iCarly TV show theme song, seconds after we'd been working on a basic major scale. Read More

My name is Jose and I'm an L.A. native. I've been singing for over twenty years in a variety of styles including classical, jazz, musical theater, pop/rock, RB, and World Music. I have a very patient and approachable teaching style and my lessons are catered to each student's needs. In my opinion, there are no dumb questions or answers but those that were never uttered. I work with both children and adults and with people from all different backgrounds. Read More

I have always had a passion to help others and to teach. I started to volunteer at an elementary school and help teach vocals for their musical theatre performance they were working on. It was a great experience to teach a group setting and see what each person needed and what would work for them to help them learn. I have substituted for a couple students and I had a student of my own for some time. Read More

I try to have as much fun as possible while still maintaining a high expectiation of performance. I am, by trade and training, a comedian, so jokes and laughter abound. Most of my students might say I'm not as funny as I think I am, but we still have fun! I am, however a stickler for learning the basics of music theory and correct use of vocabulary. Students won't move on to the next level until I know they have a firm grasp of prior concepts. Read More

Practical Application: I believe in the importance of practical application. While theoretical concepts are crucial, I incorporate hands-on learning right from the beginning. Students learn by doing, which fosters a deeper understanding and connection with the material. Creativity and Exploration: Encouraging creativity is central to my teaching approach. I guide students to explore their musical ideas, experiment with different styles, and even compose their music. This not only sparks their imagination but also cultivates a sense of ownership and pride in their musical journey. Read More
