I personally practice SOVT, where we start with light humming, use a semi-occluded means of vocalizing (such as lip trills or a straw in water) to gradually warm-up the vocal cords and bring the breath under the voice for adequate support. I was with them for 3 years and in that time I was able to not only have the students perform as a band but I also taught the students how to be "techies".
