My teaching style is very flexible in that all students are different, and learn in different ways. Ive taught really young kids and Ive also taught seniors. For my string students, I typically use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements at first, and then I introduce the Suzuki Method for solo repertoire once they have progressed on their instruments. For my vocal students, I find what type of music my student is interested in, and I then recommend a voice book that we will pick repertoire from. Mistakes are how every singer improves! With older students, I want to help students learn to recognize their own mistakes and areas they can improve on. I will always be ready to help them on trouble areas or encourage them when they get it right, but I want them to learn how to recognize it on their own so they can develop outside of a lesson! For voice I create my own custon lesson plans and use a variety of materials. Students will work on a great variety of repetorie from pop to renaissance. Students are encourgaed to learn to read music, with a great emphasis placed upon practical music theory. I aim to develop intellegent musical artists, foscuing upon intrepretation, critical thinking, historical considerations and creativity. The voice is not something we can see or touch, so I often joke that singing is about learning Jedi mind tricks that help us achieve a healthy technique. I like to incorporate theory/musicianship and some piano into my lessons to create a well rounded understanding of singing as a musician.
