I'm an engaging and energetic musician/teacher that thrives in helping my students discover their passion for music. After graduating from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Arts (concentration in Creative Writing and Jazz Studies) in 2005, I have spent the past 17 years helping hundreds of private students of all ages, ability levels, backgrounds, and styles discover their musical voice on their chosen instrument. As an active performing musician, I've played in a variety of bands/contexts in my local community, helping to support, create, and grow the local music scene, while encouraging my students to perform while providing them advice on how to best do so. I try to provide a balance between structure and flexibility. The student and his or her well being is more important than the music, yet the music Fuels the lesson. My goal is that students walk out of their lessons feeling more uplifted and inspired than when they walked in. Music lessons are life lessons. The commitment to practice little by little to achieve a goal, the joy in improving step by step, the satisfaction of accomplishment, yet the challenge to continually get better...these lessons translate to all of life. Beginners of voice lessons we would be concentrating on breathing excercises and scales at first. Read More

It is important for both me and my student to have long-term and short-term goals. Long-term goals may have to do with technique--for voice, examples may be releasing tension or singing with proper breath support. Short term goals are more linked to repertoire and can be technical or musical. An example on the piano may be playing through a piece with a particular metronome marking. I have each of my students use a practice log so both the student and I can keep track of short-term goals. Read More

My method varies depending on the student. If the student wants a traditional musical approach, and is interested in learning notation and theory, then we will usually start with the Hal Leonard Book Series. If the student doesn’t want to learn notes or the more advanced musical concepts, I usually just start by teaching them simple songs that they know from the radio, TV Shows or movies. Something to get them really excited about learning and practicing, and songs that they recognize and can show others. Read More
