My teaching style is to be sensitive to each student. Each person has a different relationship and understanding of music. I try to identify and accommodate the ways in which the student learns best. Some students need explicit instruction and to be pushed, others need gentle guidance with time and space to work things out for themselves. We will also incorporate the study of fundamental music theory and sight reading I give each student material to read on technique and terms, along with sheet music and recordings. Every voice student will take home a recording of vocal exercises with which to practice at home, and later, when sight-singing is mastered, the student will begin reading from the Vaccai vocalise book. My teaching style is relaxed but focused. Understanding that each student develops at his or her own pace, I am patient and willing to answer any questions as we move along. I will set a goal for each lesson, and provide material to practice in between meetings. It's important to me that I find out what the student's goals are to ensure we are heading in the right direction. For students who are young children, I like to start working on fundamental musical and singing concepts, including posture, breath management, pitch matching, music literacy, and expression. I work with each student to find songs which are appropriate for their voice, and songs they are excited about working on.
