I have privately taught students from ages five to 56. Since I recently came out of college, I have about one year of experience teaching students part time. I also have experience teaching groups of elementary school students the violin. I encourage students to practice a certain number of hours every day according to his or her playing level. Even though I use Suzuki method for violin, I emphasize sight reading and theory. For Suzuki students, I encourage them to memorize whole book and perform before move onto next level. If, for example, a.student is playing out of tune, I wont lie and say how great he/she sounds but might say her position is so good and if her finger was a little higher on the string someone would think she was a professional. I choose to work step by step. Not to force them or pressure them on anything. As I mentioned above, having this balance between having fun, enyoing and learning how to be responsible and dedicated, is healthy and efficient! Important is to understand that to learn an instrument, you also need to practice, at least 30 min per day and not just only wanting to have the lesson, because the progress will be very minimal and slow, and the learning process will become very boring. Born in Washington D.C., I trained on violin in the Arlington area, starting with Suzuki and moving to more traditional classical studies, eventually composing and playing my own compositions starting in my early teens. I attended H.B. Woodlawn Secondary Program where I played in orchestras and numerous string ensembles, including [three?] years with the D.C. Youth Orchestra.
