I have taught music since 1994, when I was in college. What was at first a part time job blossomed into a full time job when local music stores and luthiers began recommending me. I have a strong roster of about 30 students, and maintain it mostly through word of mouth and recommendations. I teach out of my private studio, as well as people's homes. I have trained students for recitals, recording, various types of bands, and competitions. Read More

I am a classically-trained violinist and composer, with a passion for teaching music to children and adults of all ages and levels. I received my Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Indiana University, and subsequently received a scholarship to continue my studies in Paris. Over the years, I have contributed to several non-profit and El Sistema-inspired music programs, in both North and South America. My first teaching job was in Colombia, where I taught violin and directed youth orchestras, and I have gone on to teaching a wide range of music classes in Chile, Brazil, New York City, Paris, and in Austin, Texas. Most importantly, I believe every student is different and I always try to avoid a "one size fits all" approach to teaching. That said, I'm a big advocate of scales, etudes, and technical exercises, as well as exploring repertoire (solo, chamber music, and symphonic). I encourage students to listen to a wide variety of music, in addition to their work on the violin, sometimes with weekly listening assignments. Daily, systematic practice at home is required of all my students (especially younger ones) for clear progress to happen. Read More

My music pedagogy is influenced by Zoltan Kodaly, mile Jaques-Dalcroze, Edwin Gordon, and Carl Orff. For teaching violin, while I employ elements of the Suzuki Method, Strictly Strings, and Metodo Nicolo Violin to instill discipline and establish ,precision, I set up a lively, interdisciplinary, and creative environment by incorporating calisthenics, games, dancing, singing, and storytelling to encourage versatility and innovation. I have been teaching music for over 15 years as a private teacher and also a class violin instructor and orchestra director. I have also served for many years as an adjudicator for Massachussetts All State Orchestras. Currently, I have an active private studio and teach 4 days a week at a public school in Brooklyn, leading a string orchestra there and teaching group violin, viola, and cello classes. There are about 300 students in my program. Read More

For voice, I focus on proper understanding of the body and its role in singing. I combine this with a breakdown of individual skills followed by performance practice. The combination of the 2 allows there to be an understanding of the correct technique and an immediate opportunity for application. This is accompanied with homework in the form of exercises and books. For violin and piano, it is a similar process. I create and customize lesson plans for each of my students to that it is relevant to their goals and needs. Read More

For beginner students, I like to work on positioning the instrument, proper bow hold, and simple string crossing exercises. A great beginners book is the quick steps to note reading. I believe beginner students should be practicing with this book every day. When they are ready to start learning pieces, I really like to use the Suzuki books. This works for both young beginners and adult beginners. For students who are more advanced, I am adamant about them practicing scales and etudes. Read More
