For violin, viola, cello and bass, I teach the Suzuki method. The Suzuki method is based strongly on memory and takes a systematic approach to introducing music of increasing difficulty. For classical guitar, I start off with the Frederick Noad system, "Solo Guitar Playing", and scales. As skill level increases, I assign more etudes and standard guitar repertoire. For acoustic guitar, I teach almost exclusively finger-picking. I teach the same high standard skills for acoustic guitar that I teach for classical, but concentrate on masterpieces of the repertoire. Read More

First lesson I start by assessing what level the student is at and what goals they have with their music and develop a lesson plan from there. I focus first on fundamentals of sound and technique to build a foundation for the student then work on scales and repertoire to get them playing music. From there it is a focus on musicality and performance. A lesson plan for example may be working on solo repertoire by breaking down the piece by focusing on different elements that make the song; the scale, they rhythm, certain patterns by measure, techniques required, etc. Read More

I am partial to Samuel Applebaum's methods: For young beginners, I like tto begin with the String Builder series; then, to improve upon understanding of key signatures, move on to Scales for Strings. Similarly, I'm also a fan of Suzuki, although I am not entirely limited to those two. And, of course recital and performance pieces are a must, preferably of the students's choosing - usually students already have something in mind that they want to learn! Read More

It is extremely important to me that every student benefits from his or her own personally tailored lesson. This means that there is no "cut and paste" lesson plan to use with each student. Once I get to know the student, I will be able to judge their level of playing ability, their ability to read music, how good their posture is, how good their hand position is, etc. It is also important to me to get to know the student's personality, so that when teaching, I can help make the student feel as comfortable as possible during the lesson. I teach the student as much as they can absorb while making sure they understand the material.I have never run out of material to teach.I teach proper technique and about scales because every song written is based on scales.I also work on songs with the student at the same time so they can see and understand how the songs and scales are used together.After the basics are understood we move on to songs the student wants to learn.I can also tailor lessons to a students wants or needs if desired.I have been doing this quite a while and understand what works.
