I use a number of resources to teach students concepts in musical performance. This includes online resources and method books that enhance fundamentals and technique. I do believe that understanding of music theory is necessary to advance beyond the intermediate level, and this system has assisted in training many students over the years. Novice students are encouraged through movement and activities to teach concepts while intermediate players are given exercises that focus on instrumental technique to strengthen musicality. Fun and engaging! Andy tried to find the musical interests of each student to keep them practicing and wanting to learn more. Andy uses method books, but also sheet music of the student's favorite songs to balance technique with enjoyment. Andy is well versed in all styles of music in addition to theory, ear training and improvisation, giving his students a well rounded experience with music. Read More

I'm a Suzuki-trained violinist and singer, a graduate of the University of Houston, and have studied music for the majority of my life! I'm based in Houston and have performed in opera and with various musical theater companies in the Houston area. Even though I've focused on classical music for most of my career, I love branching out into different styles, particularly Celtic, Texan, Jewish, Romani, and even a bit of Zydeco. Read More

Those who are new in playing the violin/viola for the first time, I would start addressing how to care and properly hold their instrument and get them familiarize with the essential elements boors book which has simple exercises and fun modern music at the same time, so the student can learn and also have fun! Those who have a little bit more experience than a beginner in playing the violin or viola, I would ask them to play a solo piece and a scale so I can start analyzing and start working in technique such as bow usage, bow hold word, hand frame, intonation, etc. Read More

Depending on students age and ability, I use different kind of methods. For students that are new to music I usually start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, this book is really good to start to learn about music and the instrument, and then Suzuki method for repertoire. For more advanced students I like to set learning steps, that way my students can achieve goals quickly and feel more engaging to practice. Read More

Margaret Pardee was one of my notable teachers when I studied at Juilliard as a Fulbright scholar. Miss Pardee was Ivan Galamian's assistant trough his teaching career. I hold a Doctoral Diploma from a National Conservatory in Italy where I learned the legendary tradition of the ITALIAN violin school: from Vivaldi to Viotti, from Viotti to Rolla, from Rolla to Paganini, from Paganini to Sivori, from Sivori to Serato and from Serato to Gulli. I only want my students to have a positive experience when leaving our lesson. I am constantly letting them know what they've done well, along with what goals we need to work on. I focus on the sandwich method, which is one positive trait, something to work on, then another positive trait. Everyone is different, so their learning pace is different as well. I do expect them to put at least some effort in at home via practicing (although I know things come up sometimes), otherwise it would be hard to find progress when they haven't practiced what we were working on.
