For the beginning string player I like to start with a Hal Leonard method book to communicate and help string players master the basics. Once the student has progressed I will begin some solo repertoire from varying genres. I find it is always helpful to allow students to play music that they enjoy - experiencing a range of both popular and classical pieces to broaden their horizons. Every student learns differently and at their own speed, so I make it a priority to adjust my teaching style to fit my students individual needs. As a tactile learner myself, I tend to encourage each student to bring a pencil to their lessons, to mark their music in whatever way helps them, as well as colored pencils to highlight dynamics and articulation.
