In my opinion, it is very important that the teacher understand each student's motivation for studying music. Hearing, and playing along with, recordings of lesson material will very much benefit intonation (tuning) and rhythm. For that reason, the Hal Leonard method books are very good; and the Suzuki books are excellent for repertoire, when the student has established a foundation. For violin I usually use Suzuki Method and will introduce etudes like Wohlfahrt or Kreutzer. I also have fun with Christmas music, pop and fiddle. If they are young children aged 4-6, I will use the "I Can Read Music" by Joanne Martin. For guitar I use a variety of different classical method and etude books. Once students have grasped the fundamentals of the instrument through beginner repertoire, we will explore music of increased difficulty according to the student's preference. As a cellist, it is standard to visit Popper etudes and J.S. Bach's six suites. Mike Block's Contemporary Cello Etudes book has several fun techniques, such as slapping, chopping, and singing while playing, which would be great for intermediate players. We will explore several areas of repertoire and find something interesting to the student. Read More

For students that are new to music I usually start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, this book is really good to start to learn about music and the instrument, and then Suzuki method for repertoire.
