I believe in a positive perspective on practicing: regular practice will greatly enhance a student's progress with lessons. Focusing on, and isolating, challenges, rather than practicing what has already been acquired, will help the student gain proficiency and fluency in his or her musical ability. My teaching style is very patient and encouraging and I can tailor my lesson plans to suit each individual student. Although building technique and comfort are extremely important, I find that the most essential aspect of learning an instrument is to study the music that you love, and I'm definitely open to adding a bit of musical theory to every lesson if the student is interested. For the beginning string player I like to start with a Hal Leonard method book to communicate and help string players master the basics. Once the student has progressed I will begin some solo repertoire from varying genres. I find it is always helpful to allow students to play music that they enjoy - experiencing a range of both popular and classical pieces to broaden their horizons.
