I found myself wanting to teach students, of all ages- anyone that had a desire to learn the cello. With regard to my private studio, I teach using the traditional method. I believe every student needs a foundation of classical music. If a student wishes to learn other genres, I am happy to support those interests as well. I teach music primarily through reading. I incorporate some ear training. I also teach music theory and music history within a given lesson, because it is my believe that theory and history assist students in having a greater understanding of why they are performing what they are and how to interpret the work. As we progress in cello, they would need to purchase a scale book, possibly other Suzuki books, an etude book, as well as other individual pieces that they would learn. My goal is for students to love playing their instrument so much after every lesson that they are motivated to keep working on concepts outside of their lesson time. Thus far, all of my private lesson students practice outside of their lessons, and I hope to keep it that way! I believe that all students are capable of learning music regardless of preconceived notions about talent level. I understand that people have busy schedules, but I expect them to make some time to practice outside of lessons even if it is only for 10 or 20 minutes per day. Read More

I enjoy accommodating students with the exact type of lessons they need. For beginners I use a slow approach at first, attempting to minimize the chance of bad habits. We begin with starting with proper hold of the instruments, left hand placement, and simple pizzicato; the same would be done with guitar. I went on to start my masters degree work at the University of Texas in Austin.
