I am not a fan of "rote learning" so my lessons tend to include a large amount of cognitive thinking by me constantly asking questions and making you pay attention to your own playing habits. For young beginners, I recommend starting with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for Band. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals, we will introduce solo pieces appropriate for the child's skill level and purposes (preparing for a performance vs learning for fun, for example). For older students, we will work quickly to establish a firm knowledge of the fundamentals before moving on to more complex pieces based on the student's interests. Read More

Even though I teach a wide array of musical stiles, every lesson will include the fundamentals and instrumental approach. Posture and Breathing are critical to emphasize every time we pick up our instrument. No matter what we are performing, this always applies and will be addressed as need be. MOST IMPORTANTLY, if my students and I are not smiling and having fun, then I'm doing something wrong!
