It is important to use relatable and relevant music in addition to classical and jazz. Everything from Bach to Charlie Parker to Ariana Grande deserves respect and being open minded from a teachers point of view is very important to retain students. Furthermore, it is crucial to not overcomplicate musical concepts. Too many teachers try to confuse their students with the objective of feeling powerful and intelligent. This usually just drives students away. Read More

The methods I use are dependent on the ability level of each particular student. For beginning students, they usually have books given to them (i.e. Essential elements) by their band director at school - which is a fantastic way to start. I think it really depends on the needs of each individual player. There are several great trumpet method books such as Arban's complete conservatory method, Clarke's technical studies, Schlossberg's Daily Drills, etc. Read More

I start my students with a single lesson where I gain a knowledge about the student's musical abilities and personality. I will pull from Essential Elements, Accent on Achievement, and Standard of Excellence, as well as writing and devising my own warm ups and methods. Read More

I have worked with several different marching band programs as a trumpet instructor, and I was also the brass instructor for a music shop near my college. Read More

Not every person is going to become a musician, as we all have our own passions and dreams. I want my students to find joy, acceptance, and relief from music, not dread and loathing. I like to ask questions such as "How did playing this passage make you feel? or "What is this piece of music mean to you?" Every piece of music elicits some response from us, and I fully believe that recognition and further development of that response can change the way we perceive music. Read More

I normally create a lesson plan that develop the student skills yet keep them interested in wanting to learn more about music not just a whole lot of theory. I also believe, the best way is hands on work. (Practical learning) I keep the lesson interesting and the syllabus simple for learn whatever it is I'm teaching with homework for practice. I enjoy creating lesson plans that I read from other books and use the books to help demonstrate and support the lesson I'm teaching. and to follow the guidelines for teaching. Read More

I have been singing since I was 6, playing trumpet since I was 10, and I picked up guitar in my early 20's. I am now 49 and have taught voice, guitar, trumpet for over 7 years from my cozy home. I have been part of many musical ensembles (in many genres) in my 30 year career and have session work that's currently located in the Seattle Rock Roll museum. I have performed in varying capacities over 2,000 times in my career, and my emphasis is to help musicians prepare for live performances. Read More
