I began playing the piano when I was eight, picked up the saxophone at ten, and have been playing flute and clarinet now for about six years. At the University of Idaho, I had the opportunity to be a Learning Assistant for freshman music theory, aural skills, and jazz theory; a position that involved more actual teaching than the typical teaching assistantship. Aquiles Navarro is a New York-based trumpeter, composer and DJ of Panamanian heritage. He derives his sounds from folkloric music, salsa, and reggae. This eclectic music background, based on his upbringing in Panama has led him to collaborate with folkloric musicians, dancers, visual artists, actors, and poets. He studied in Panama with tenor player Carlos Garnett and trumpeter Victor “Vitin” Paz.
