I began teaching in 2012 as a senior in high school working at a community music school's summer arts camp in New York. I worked there for five summers as an assistant instructor. I taught beginner and intermediate French horn and trumpet lessons while working there. Many of my students, both at the camp and in my private studio have gone on to make District Bands and Honor Ensembles. For trumpet students I initially provide my own material, based on the exercises which I have found to be beneficial in my own playing. Early on, I'll ask most students to play a recording of one of their favorite songs, which we'll use to improvise to as well as for ear-training purposes. My new students typically spend their first lesson and sometime their second getting used to playing the trumpet for the first time; the goal is to learn proper breathing, posture and tone. I have found the best method book for students is the "Learn to Play the Trumpet/Cornet" method book and always ask that students purchase the Arban's Method book, a must have for any trumpet player. Once the student is proficient in beginning methods, I like to move on to technical studies and the Sigmund Hering Etudes, as well as studies in the Arban's Method; if the student has progressed well enough Concertos and solo performance music will be added. I stay flexible to the individual students' needs. I try to keep the student engaged and ask many questions to help them become their own best teacher. I will give assignments and create goals but also want the student to be self motivated. I will not be overly strict when it comes to practice. I like to have the student approach music with joy and curiosity. I like to keep the learning positive and help the students find their voice within music and find what motivates them intrinsically.
