I believe there is no "cookie cutter" method to teaching so I tailor my lessons specifically to each of my students. I have found that having a strong foundation in classical music sets the tone for musical excellence for all styles, regardless of age or musical maturity. From that perspective I like to start all of my students on The Arban's and Herbert L. Clarke Method books for trumpet. For beginning students, I start with a basic method book. Most often, they are enrolled in school band already and I am happy to use whatever method books their teacher uses. Otherwise, I start with the Rubank elementary method for trumpet and cornet. We incorporate music-making (simple songs and tunes) from the very beginning. For beginning students who are children, I typically begin with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements; as well as other, more auditory practices that do not require a book. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce other solo repertoire pieces that I feel the student is ready for, and assist in musical execution for future recitals. For adults, I try to first find out what the student is interested in, and then guide my lessons in such a way that would be beneficial for their goal, as well as their musicianship. Read More

For students beginning on any brass instrument, the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements is the go to for most music educators. I also try to find solo repertoire for students based on their age and level of experience. Performing as a soloist is just as important as being in an ensemble. The Rochut Legato Studies for trombone and Blahzevich Clef studies are also great tools for more advanced students.
