I began taking private lessons shortly after I joined the band program in middle school. I continued to take lessons all throughout high school and college. Shortly after graduating high school I was offered the position of drum instructor. During college I taught for several years as the drum instructor at Winter Haven High School. For beginning students who are just picking up the horn, we focus on the very basics on how to make noises on it. Once they understand how it make sounds, we slow work on refining and controlling so we can actually learn to play! Older and more experienced students will learn how to make Music, not just playing the notes on the page. A lot of time goes into understanding musicality, so we will often listen to recordings, play together to find different way to express musical ideas, and take time to really understand and comprehend different music genres.
