I started teaching lessons in college. I began teaching lessons 6 years ago, and have always taught in-home lessons. I believe that teaching in the home will help my students be more comfortable practicing at home. I prefer the one on one setting that teaching lessons gives you over the large ensemble setting. I believe it gives more opportunity to grow as a player. Trumpet: For beginning students who are children we begin with the basics. Learning how to blow, to buzz on the mouthpiece, getting a sound is key. Setting the embouchure I will listen to each student and adjust as needed. My students will play long tones on their mouthpieces and sirens blowing fast and slow increasing their range going up and down. They will be given simple exercises that will help them build their range and flexibility moving in a chromatic scale up and down. Read More

Sound is the most important aspect of trumpet playing, and the good thing is you can practice pretty much anything and still focus on your sound. For beginners I usually supplement their beginner band book with some simple drills from Schlossberg's Daily Drills or some I wrote myself. The Clarke's Technical Studies and Arban's Complete Conservatory Method are great books as well that I use with most of my intermediate/advanced students. Read More

I have performed in music ensembles since childhood. As an elementary school student I performed in regionally recognized handbell, soprano recorder, and choir ensembles and I am a strong advocate of these types of ensembles at the elementary level. As a middle and high school student I participated in jazz, concert, symphonic, and marching band. While attending Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia I participated in Orchestra (trumpet), Glee Club, and Jazz Band (piano) and have extensive experience performing in symphonic and concert ensembles ensembles. After that I received a bachelors degree in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas and then a masters degree in trumpet performance from the University of Texas at Arlington. I keep a busy schedule as a freelance musician and perform regularly with the Dallas Jazz Orchestra. I also do the occasional the tour with different groups.
