I typically create my own lesson plans and try to cater them to the student. Most recently I've been working with trying to find a balance of teaching music theory and practical piano. When teaching theory, I often refer to Kotska's and Payne's "Tonal Harmony" for the order of the curriculum, and when it comes to exercises I will either write them out on the spot to demonstrate something to the student (I also feel it is important to SHOW the student how to MAKE music, ie. proper note notation, and symbol shape), or prepare them in advance if the content is more complex. Seeing a student excel and reach their goals is the most rewarding experience a teacher can have. Everyone works at a different speed, and I expect each student to do the best they can do. I do not believe in forcing a "one size fits all" teaching method on every student. No two students are the same, and I try to take each student's strengths, goals and preferences into account when designing their custom curriculum. For brass, I devise custom exercises for the player in addition to using classic pedagogical texts such as the Arban's and Clarke books. For piano, I start students off with a combination of scale work and repertoire. All lessons with me will include learning a wide variety of repertoire as well as a fair bit of improvisation, as I believe it is an invaluable tool for developing ears, creativity and musical personality. In college, I started giving out lessons to Music Education friends who were learning trumpet for their brass profiency. I also gave some lessons to a friend who had no prior brass experience, and that experience was the main point in how I developed my beginner lessons.
