Music has been a big part of my life since I was in the third grade when I first joined the school choir. Eventually I migrated to playing Saxophone in middle school then to low brass in high school. After high school, I made the trombone my primary instrument, though I continued to play euphonium and tuba in college in various ensembles. I have had the opporunity to play all over the country including the Latin Jazz Grammys, the Playboy Jazz Festival, Central Avenue Jazz Festival, the IAJE conference, and for the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM). My motto is my students create their own lesson. I formulate lesson plans off of the styles of music you are most interested in. If my student has a more "just for fun" attitude, the lesson will inevitably be a more light hearted feel. If the student would like to focus on more technicalities, that as well is a different approach. However, I do have a more structured plan for younger students. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Your lessons with me will be custom oriented to your goals. You will learn confidence in your abilities to perform well and have fun. Read More

I have been a professional teacher and performer for ten years, touring nationally with funk, soul, and latin bands. The diversity of my experience as a performer has directly impacted my view on teaching. Excitement about practicing music comes directly from passion for music in general, and a key philosophy to my teaching method is to not only instill correct practices and technique, but to attempt to foster a life-long desire for musical exploration in my students. My main focus is trying to teach students HOW to learn music, so that they can eventually create their own methodology based on what works best for them. I have eight years of experience teaching private lessons, so I understand how to craft a curriculum to an individual's needs. Working with hundreds of different musicians has taught me that everyone learns music differently: some through sight reading, others with audio recordings, others still by watching someone else do it first. We can work on specific topics during our lessons, but I can also give you a bunch of things to review/work on during your own time. Read More

I enjoy and have experience composing and performing a huge range of styles, from jazz to classical, from rock to latin, and from electronic and ambient to avant-garde chamber music and experimental music. Naturally, I enjoy teaching all of it as well. Read More

The dedication it takes to learn an instrument can help develop skills values that will benefit the student throughout life, regardless of profession. Therefore, I believe that the process of learning music is more important than any particular performance that we work toward, so I take a pragmatic approach to instruction. Of course, we look forward to recitals and concerts, because they give our rehearsals direction, but it should also be emphasized that our most rewarding musical experiences may happen in lessons or private practice.
